NHIE Exterior Component Practice Exam

Insulbrick siding is primarily made of asphalt impregnated fiberboard, which is a material designed to imitate the appearance of brick while providing insulation properties. This construction method involves soaking fiberboard in asphalt, which not only gives it water-resistant qualities but also contributes to its durability.

The design of Insulbrick allows it to serve as an exterior siding option that combines aesthetic appeal with functional benefits, as it is typically lightweight, easy to install, and offers better thermal efficiency than many other siding materials. Additionally, its textured finish and variety of colors provide a versatile look suitable for various architectural styles.

While vinyl, wood composite, and concrete are other common siding materials, they differ in composition and performance characteristics. Vinyl is a plastic material that is lightweight and weather-resistant, wood composite combines wood fibers with adhesives, and concrete is a heavy, durable option typically used in more foundational aspects of construction rather than as a primary exterior siding. Understanding the specific composition of Insulbrick highlights its unique advantages and differentiates it from these other materials.
